Nursing homes used to exist the merely pick for older or disabled persons who needed aid caring for themselves. Today there are many choices that permit individuals to live independently while receiving nursing facility level of care in their home or in a community setting.
One plan run by Michigan Medicaid is the MI Choice Waiver Program. It began in 1992 as the Home and Customs Based Services for the Elderly and Disabled (HCBS/ED) waiver program. We now know it as the MI Choice Waiver Programme, or simply, "the waiver."
Through MI Choice, eligible adults who meet income and asset criteria tin receive Medicaid-covered services similar those provided by nursing homes only can stay in their ain abode or another residential setting. The waiver became bachelor in all Michigan counties October 1, 1998. Each participant tin can receive the basic services Michigan Medicaid covers, supports coordination, and one or more of the post-obit services in the waiver:
